Mathematics is the science of patterns and relationships. We naturally search for patterns in our world and sort collections in different ways all the time. For example the laundry may get sorted into ‘light and dark’, the Lego blocks may be sorted by ‘shape and size’.
This is called sorting by attributes. An attribute is a characteristic shared by the items you group together. For example, things that are a similar shape could be grouped together.
We can support children to become effective users of pattern through assisting them to notice, describe and sort by attributes.
This resource is designed to support children to notice and sort by specific attributes, including colour, shape (spatial), size and quantity. There are multiple ways each collection can be sorted. They could also be mixed into one collection for a further challenge.
