Sound boxes (Elkonin boxes) are a great way to help build students blending and segmenting skills. This is a perfect activity to supplement your guided reading or intervention group lessons. There are 2 pictures on each page, for a total of 42 cards. There are also 2 blank templates for 3 and 4 sound CVC words so you can create your own!
Print the cards on card stock and laminate (or use a plastic sleeve). You can cut each card so each student gets one or keep as a set. Students can use magnetic letters or dry erase markers to fill in the boxes. Younger students can practice blending and segmenting by using plastic chips. Each box represents one sound (phoneme). Digraphs - Are two letters that make 1 sound and get 1 box. Blends - 2 or more letters, each letter gets it own box.
