Have your students practice the science process skill of inferring with sound. When you infer, you draw a conclusion based on information not directly observed. In this lesson, students are given 10 similar containers with different objects hidden in each one. They are asked to listen to the container as it is shaken and infer what object(s) could be inside. Teacher instructions, scoring rubric, recording page, and another investigation of Sound Direction Detection are included in this lesson packet.
The basic lesson is in the green book Rising to the Challenge of the National Science Education Standards, also sold on this website. This is lesson five that will also be available for purchase in a packet of nine process skill lessons on sound.
