This STEAM & STEM project gives a students the opportunity to connect their understanding of sound and knowledge of pitch and volume to create a musical instrument using the engineering cycle
The grading rubric allows teachers to assess how students drew on their scientific knowledge of sound to explain how their instrument was created. Information should include needed measurements
, and how the instrument plays high/low pitched sounds, and loud/soft volume.
Instrument Museum Voting Slips & Awards
To celebrate students’ musical instrument creations, host an orchestra showcase. Students will walk around and examine/play their fellow musicians’ work. As they look, they will vote to decide upon 3 awards. (When I did this with my 1st and 4th graders, my rule was always you cannot vote for yourself.) After votes are in, awards can be given. A blank template is also included so you can create your own award, if desired. (b/w versions are included.)

Students read a passage about how volume and pitch are changed on instruments.

2 Venn Diagrams
: 2 Variations Each
Students will use their knowledge of high and low pitch, and loud and soft volume to complete a Venn Diagram regarding their own instrument or another classmates.
