Sound posters are a valuable and useful classroom tool. I created them to use in my own classroom because kids were having trouble learning and remembering consonant digraphs. These sound posters have been such a helpful tool in my classroom. My students have loved the posters for several reasons. They can relate to/identify with the children and objects in the posters. The posters provide a concrete, easy to commit to memory example of the sounds. The posters work as a visual reminder or clue to a particular sound. They really stick with the kids.
The posters can be used for both reading and writing. When you introduce a new digraph, the kids have the posters as a reminder. I post them on the walls of my classroom. They are a quick and easy reference for the kids. Interactive notebook pages can be used throughout the year to compile extensive word lists. The kids can use them at the writing center and with other word/writing activities. Cheat Sheets can be used for both reading and writing. They are a handy tool for the kids. Copies can also be sent home for the kids to use for reading, writing, and homework.
The sound posters will create magic in your classroom! They are visible and easy to reference. During a guided reading lesson, for instance, if a child comes across a troubling sound combination, you can easily remind him/her of the particular poster (Look at the poster of the boy eating a chip. What sound does ‘ch’ make?”). The posters help with quick sound retrieval and are an invaluable asset to instruction.
