These Sound Punchers are great for your literacy centers, your small group instruction or even as an assessment tool to see if your students have mastered the sounds you have taught. Not only do students practice their beginning sounds, but they also get to practice their fine motor skills as well!
Students look at the picture and decide which letter matches the pictures’ initial sound. The student will then punch the letters that match that sound using a hole punch. Each picture has 10 correct letters that the student will need to punch.
There are 96 different punch cards that come in both a colored and black & white version. Each letter of the alphabet has 4 punch cards with the exception of the letters O, U, and X. These 3 letters only have 2 punch cards each. A variety of fonts (uppercase and lowercase) were used on each punch card to help students to discriminate different ways you may see a letter written.
I’ve used these Sound Punchers a couple of different ways.
1.Print out the blackline version, cut out each card and have students complete.
2. Print each page on cardstock and place in a protective sleeve and have your student mark a X for each pictures’ initial sound using a dry erase marker.
3. Print each page on cardstock, cut out each task card, laminate and place in a center. Students will mark a X for each pictures’ initial sound using a wet erase marker. This way you can determine how many you want your students to complete and you can vary which sounds they work on.
