This file includes 100 Sound Substitution cards designed to support students’ listening skills while improving their phonological awareness.
This set includes 50 word cards on which students change the initial sound to make a new word and 50 cards on which students change the final sound to make a new word. A page of blank templates is also included so students can add their own cards to the deck. (The cards are color coded to make it easy to keep the sets separate if desired.)
These cards are perfect to read to young students as they are developing phonemic awareness. For beginning readers, I read the riddles and provide support as needed to help students learn to answer the questions.
They are also helpful for readers who you would like to develop stronger phonological awareness and listening skills. I like to introduce the cards whole group, then have partners play during a literacy center. Partners place the deck of cards, face down, in between them. They take turns picking the top card, reading it, and checking their partner’s answer.
In introducing these cards, I reinforce the importance of clearly pronouncing words so their partner can hear the beginning and ending sound of each word.
Partners can also sort cards by whether the spelling pattern changes when deleting the initial or final sound.
For fluency practice, partners can set a timer for one minute and see how many cards they can complete in that time.
I find that kids like the predictability and rhythm of this game.
Thanks so much for stopping by and taking a look!
Sincerely, Anne Gardner
