Students can practice changing the beginning, middle and ending sounds of words to build new words. A great phonemic awareness activity for a literacy center or small group work. Students' ability to manipulative sounds are supported by the picture cards and short vowel chart. Play it aloud or ask students to record words on the response page.
Print and laminate the picture cards and short vowel chart. Copy the response page for each student. Students will check off if they are changing the beginning, middle, or ending sound. Then they can sound out each word on the top line, then the new (slightly different) word on the bottom line. Example: pen-pan.
Optional: Students can highlight the word parts they changed or the word parts that stayed the same.
**You could certainly cut up your picture cards but it may be helpful to keep the pages whole for one student at a time.**
