This song begins with a riddle that the teacher reads to the class. The class then tries to solve the riddle but may need to sing the song first to do so. I have written this song in a quasi middle eastern style so that students get to sing songs in a variety of styles. You can almost smell the camels, feel the hot sand underfoot, and be dazzled by the dancers.

Sound and Silence Lyrics Copyright 2007 Francis Piccin

There are two main ingredients we find in every song,

See if you can guess them and I'll tell you if you're wrong

Some have said it's drums and bass, or flute and clarinet

I'd really like to say they're right but no, they're incorrect

There are two main ingredients, we find in every song,

See if you can guess them and I'll tell you if you're wrong.

Sound ---and --Silence (repeat)

In every song we sing you'll always find two things

In every song you'll always find sound and silence

A sound is called a note and silence is a rest

In every song there'll always be sound and silence

If you want to write a sound, you'll have to draw a note

If you want to write silence you'll have to draw a rest

There are seven different notes and seven different rests

That's how we write music using notes and rests
