As teachers, we are constantly telling our students that if they don’t know how to spell something, they need to sound it out. However, very young writers need to be taught how to do this.
These pages are a great way to practice sounding out big words! At the beginning of the year, I do this with my kids. We stretch the word out of our mouths (like we are pulling chewing gum) so we can hear all of the sounds. Then we say each sound and write down the letters all together. After sounding out the words, I often give them a writing prompt that ties in with the theme of the page (for example, if the theme is animals, the prompt will be something like “My favorite animal is a ________________________.”) Because I begin with modeling this process, students are soon able to do this independently and are more confident in their writing skills!
This download includes 45 pages with various themes. These themes are: Things at School, Animals, Farm Friends, Recess, Let’s Have a Picnic, Bugs, Weather, When I Grow Up, Camping, Cooking, Feelings, Fairy Tales, On the Farm, Fruit, Forest Friends, Rainy Day, Vegetables, At the Zoo, Ocean Animals, PB&J, Tools, Sports, Community Helpers, Pizza, Music, Food, Verbs, Gone Fishing, Arctic Animals, Dinosaurs, Fall Fun, Sick Day, Art Supplies, Science, Outer Space, Gardening, Spring, Let’s Go, Hocus Pocus, Money, Winter, At the Beach, In the Lunchroom, Happy Birthday, and Summer.
These pages have really made a difference in my students’ writing, and I know your students will love them, too!
