Product Description
Sounder by William Armstrong
Sounder Novel Teaching Guide is a 70-page, 8 component resource for teaching William Armstrong's 1970 Newbery Medal Winner.

Teaching Guide Components
Sounder Chapter Summaries
(1)The detailed CHAPTER SUMMARIES, written in bulleted format for easy reference, provide a quick method for becoming familiar with the material when time is limited and for refreshing memory when using the novel from year to year.

Sounder Prereading Activities
(2)PREREADING ACTIVITIES include a graphic organizer, discussion and research topics, and a bulletin board idea.

Sounder Vocabulary Study
(3)In the VOCABULARY section are word lists with page numbers and definitions, dictionary activities, and usage worksheets.

Sounder Short Answer Questions
(4)The chapter-by-chapter SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS can be put to use in a variety of ways including homework reading guides. The questions require detailed, FACTUAL responses.

Sounder Objective Tests
(5)The series of OBJECTIVE TESTS, which cover the book as chapter-by-chapter quizzes and as a whole book test, DO NOT REQUIRE STORY INTERPRETATION. They do check for basic story comprehension.

Students will find it necessary to read the material carefully and thoroughly for FACTUAL CONTENT in order to score well on these tests. The goal of this component is to build a strong foundation for progression to the higher level thinking skills.

Sounder Thinking Skills
(6)The activities in THINK, WRITE, CREATE, both chapter-by-chapter and whole book, require students to engage the HIGHER LEVEL THINKING SKILLS of Bloom's Taxonomy. These open-ended activities cover a range of difficulties from basic to challenges for gifted students. The items are designed to spark divergent, creative, and speculative thinking, build vocabulary, inspire research, and encourage student interaction with the story and its characters.

Sounder Graphic Organizers for Writing
(7)The GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS are based on specific novel events or characters rather than a standard design. Each one offers opportunities for practicing and improving writing skills.

(8)Full ANSWER KEYS are included.
Ideas/rationale for using each component is included in the file.
