Why settle for boring word sorts when you can offer your students an activity or game featuring cute puppies to practice spelling patterns?
Students mix and match –s, -se, -z, -ze and -zz word endings with initial word chunks to form words.The cards combine to make 65 words (5 sets of 13 words). The initial letters of the word show the dog in one agility event, and the final spelling of the /z/ sound shows the dog in the same, or another, agility event. By mixing and matching the two types of cards for each dog, all of them can be used to form words. The cards allow for easy hands-on experimentation with these tricky spelling patterns.
Give each student a set (or more than 1 set) of cards. Each set has a mixture of the five final spellings of the /z/ sound. An optional recording sheet is included for students to write down the words they form.
To play as a game, choose as many sets of cards as you have players. Each player chooses a dog picture card to be his/her dog. Players take turns flipping over a word card. If it features his/her dog, the player keeps the card. If it is not a match, it is discarded. When a player has 2 or more cards, he/she can put down any two which form a word. If a player forms a word with an incorrect final spelling, he/she must put those cards in the discard pile. The discard pile is shuffled and reused until one player forms10 of his/her words (or all 13).
Both the sorting activity and game are great for centers.
