Students really enjoy this assignment and most importantly, really understand it! This creative assignment makes the complex racial history of South Africa easy to understand as students turn an illustrated and structured reading into a storyboard of captions and visuals. The story covers hundreds of years, focusing on the 1600's to 1900's as native African tribes clashed with the Dutch and British, who also clashed with each other. The activity ends with apartheid as the law of the land, a perfect set up for Nelson Mandela and the ANC.
For the next step, I would highly suggest checking out my "South Africa Newspaper: Nelson Mandela and Apartheid" in order to bring Mandela and the resistance movement to life through a variety of activities.
