If you teach about the geography of South America and would like your students to become familiar with the names of the South American countries as well as give them some practice with latitude and longitude then this South American Bundle might be just what you are looking for.
South America: Country Flash Cards Set
Included in this set are three different choices of flash cards for your students.
- Print the set of South America political maps that have an individual country shaded in with red colored pencil and the name of the country on the back. This option is 8 pages that would be printed back to back and students can cut them out and use them right away. I prefer to print on cardstock so the name isn't visible through the paper.
- Print the political maps of South America that have an individual country name on the back but don't have any of the countries shaded in. This is also 8 pages that would be printed back to back. Again the preference is to print on cardstock, and your students would use an atlas to locate where the countries are and shade them in on their own.
- Print the political maps of South America that don't have names on the back as well as a copy of the List of South American Countries file. These maps are on 4 pages and do not get printed back to back since students would have to shade the countries in on their own as well as write the name of the country on the back.
I've found that many students enjoy practicing flash cards like this over the plethora of online country identification games. The reason being is that students can make two piles as they practice identifying the countries. One stack is of the countries they correctly identified as they go through them and the other stack is the countries they still need more practice with.
The 15 countries included are in accordance with the countries listed on the 2014 CIA World Factbook.
South America Latitude and Longitude Coordinates Puzzle
This puzzle is a set of 50 coordinates that will eventually form the shape of South America. This is a great task for students learning latitude and longitude or as a practice for those who already know latitude and longitude. I have used this formative assessment with students for years and have found that when they know that the coordinates will eventually make a shape it helps them to see if they are using the right directions. Students will plot the coordinates one at a time, label them in numerical order, and finally connect the dots to hopefully see the outline of South America. It has worked great for my students so I hope yours find the same success. Enjoy!
