A Study of South America
South American Pizza
Papa Zigtoni has a new line of pizza choices on his menu. After visiting South America he has decided to offer the Pizzas of the World. With a partner, make a pizza about your assigned South American country. Your pizza must have at least six equal sized slices. You and your partner need to decide what is the most important information to include. Each piece should have a main topic. At least one slice needs to compare your country to another South American country. The outside cover of the box should have the country name in large letters. Inside the cover should be a collage about your country.
When studying countries, students quickly learn what aspects are focussed upon. I would create a list of possibilities along with the students for areas of potential focus, such as: economy, culture, government, schools, tourist places, historical sites, famous people, religion, resources, currency, landforms, history, etc.
All of the research about the current conditions within the country should be done online. The information that is gathered should be typed. The photos that are used in the collage will probably be found online although travel agents have some great resources too. Titles must be typed and large. Technology is required, but not the focus of the activity but just used as a tool.
South American Vehicle
Draw and label a vehicle that could handle the variety of ecosystems found traveling through South America. In a written description, explain how this vehicle adapts to the various ecosystems. Kids love this activity. Before they draw and create their final creation I would have the pairs present to me the list of ecosystems found in that location and the adaptations they plan their vehicle to contain. Any research needed should be done online and the descriptions should be typed and then attached to the poster board. Technology is required, but not the focus of the activity but just used as a tool.
Generic Pizza Rubric
A rubric for making a pizza box project about a country in the world, but not specific to South America is included. Fill in the blank for the countries (or states) your students are studying!
