This activity is geared towards South Carolina's third grade social studies standards.
In this Tic-Tac-Toe game, students will choose between two types of game boards: SayIt! and Name It!.
There are 6 different Say It! games: an Overview board and a board for each explorer- Hernando de Soto, Jean Ribault, Juan Pardo, William Hilton, and Henry Woodward.
Player 1 will choose a square and say the word(s) relating to S.C explorers. He or she will then place a symbol (x or o) on that square. Player 2 will go next. First player to get three of his or her symbols in a row wins the game.
Player 1 will choose a square and name the explorer or term being described. If the student gets the answer correct, he or she will place a symbol on that square. Player 2 will go next. The first player to get three of his or her symbols in a row wins the game.
I've included symbol cards for students to use. Simply print on cardstock and laminate for durability. You could also laminate the game boards and have your students use dry erase markers to write their symbols.
I also have games for South Carolina's Native Americans, People of the Carolina Colony, and South Carolina's Land Regions.
This activity is now a part of my South Carolina Explorers Bundle!

***Alternate Activity*** Your students could cut apart the cards, flip them over (except the names of the explorers), and take turns turning over cards and matching them to the explorers.
