This self-constructed DBQ contains five sources and asks students the key question, Why did individuals settle in South Carolina instead of the other colonies? It contains one letter (Doc A), two slave adverts (Doc B), one painting (Doc C), excerpts from the Carolina Charters of 1663 (Doc D), and a pamphlet on religious intolerance (Doc E). The DBQ contains a source citation as well as a link to each document. This is particularly important for the painting and the pamphlet, which will likely not print pristinely, and are better displayed on a SmartBoard.
Possible answers inferred from the documents include: Fertile Region, Religious Freedom, Protection, and Commerce Potential. These can be gained by mixing and matching several documents, or analyzing individual documents in depth.
This packet solely contains the question, the documents, and a short hook activity. It does not include any writing suggestions or student samples.
