This activity is geared towards South Carolina's third grade social studies standards. It is meant to be used in connection with the South Carolina Studies Weekly
newspaper. If you do not have access to the newspaper, your students can simply research the answers using a computer.
Each activity page includes the following:
1. Newspaper article title
2. Vocabulary found in the newspaper article
3. The main idea of the newspaper article
4. Detail questions to help support the main idea.
Two ways I use this in my classroom:
Each group is assigned one newspaper article. The group looks over the vocabulary words that will be found in the text. The group then reads the main idea box, so they will know what the article is about. Last, the group works together to answer the questions. After all groups have finished, I call on one group at a time to share what they have read.
**If some groups finish before other groups, I have my early finishers illustrate events from their article on their activity sheet.
Each student receives the entire activity packet. Therefore, they are required to read all newspaper articles and complete all activities. This is done over several days. They may work independently or collaboratively.
This activity is a great way to incorporate literacy into social studies. This also works great as a literacy station.
I hope your students learn a lot from this activity packet!
