Introduce students to the North's view of southern slavery through the Fugitive Slave Act and Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Students read a variety of primary source documents including a runaway slave ad, pictures, excerpts from Frederick Douglass' Narrative, and Virginia laws. Students use the documents to write a creative response diary entry from the perspective of a slave in the south.
