Explore the southwest region using QR codes!
I always dreaded teaching the regions unit in social studies. I felt like the students never truly understood how diverse our country is because they had very little background knowledge. Then, I decided to let them experience it for themselves using QR codes and WOW! That was the spark that we needed to get excited about this unit.
In this product, students will read short passages and use their device to scan QR codes about the region's climate, natural resources, landmarks, culture, and people. I have included two
options to do this:
1. 5 Student work pages divided by category
2. Scavenger hunt cards with a recording sheet
Each page has its own answer key.
QR codes will take students to either a video hosted on Vimeo, a photograph, or a Google Maps 360 photosphere that they can interact with.
As a cumulative project and/or assessment, students will plan a vacation to this region. They will use what they learned from the passages and QR codes to plan what to pack, buy, eat, see, and do. Students will write a short paragraph about their vacation on the travel journal page. A rubric is included for grading purposes. Another technology option would be to use the vacation planner pages to create a vacation video using their device. How cool would that be?
I will be working on adding the remaining regions throughout the year, so check back often!
