Nothing gets students more excited about space then looking at the possibilities of humans reaching other planets and establishing colonies. In this project, students will be given guiding questions to become experts on their part of a space colony, and will then design what their part of colony will look like and function as, all while taking in to consideration the physical and chemical aspects of the planet that is being colonized.
This is an excellent whole class project, because each group is doing one part of the colony, and in the end, the students come together and end up creating a complete colony.
The teacher or the class as a whole can choose the planet, and the students will then get to research information on how to make their colony component work on a place like Mars, Jupiter, Venus, or a moon like Europa.
The colony project is a great week long, inquiry and project based activity that incorporates research, collaboration, innovation, creativity, and presentation skills.
