This presentation goes over the changes in appearance of the moon. It poses the question "Why does the moon appear to change shape?" to the students and then goes on to help them better understand the concept. There is a diagram of the moon's revolution around the Earth which includes the position of the sun as well. The diagram will show them that although the moon is always half lit, we see it differently!
Also included in this presentation are the names of the phases of the moon: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning crescent (and back to new moon).
There is also a slide on the vocabulary of the phases including: waxing, waning, crescent, gibbous, and quarter to make sure they understand how to identify each of these "shapes" and the meaning of waxing and waning.
This presentation has two points where you would stop and allow for student discussion and/or feedback. I went back to this presentation again and again as we went through the unit.
