Liven up your first days of school with this mini-unit, Space Splendor. Filled with community building activities, your students will never know that they are learning about themselves and their classmates while having fun doing it! The activities are simple and don't take a lot of time, so you will still have time to do those "mandatory" first week activities.
Included in this resource are:
~A Student Welcome Gift Idea from the Teacher: Included are rocket printables with the saying, "You're Out of This World!" Attach a Mars candy bar for an extra special treat!
~Planet Order Line-Up: Included is a full-page color and black and white poster of the correct order of the planets with a sentence students can use to remember the order. There are mini-cards to pass out to students with the names of planets on them. The students' challenge is to find other students and put themselves in the correct order. They can use the poster as a reference. This is a fun line-up, community building activity perfect for those first few days.
~My Personal Flag: Students should have seen photos of astronauts planting a flag on planets they step foot on. Have students imagine they are one of those astronauts, but they're going to put a personalized flag on the planet. Their job is to draw a flag that represents them, on the included printable. I've also provided you with a lined writing sheet, in case you'd like to get an informal writing assessment during the first few days. Have students share their flag designs with partners so they can learn more about each other.
~My Perfect Planet: This activity will be perfect when discussing classroom rules and why they're needed. Have students pretend they own the perfect planet, and it's perfect because all the rules are followed and it's orderly. But what are the rules? Get students thinking about good classroom rules by making a mini-book about their perfect planet and its rules.
