You have a new batch of emergent readers/writers and their writing is a hot mess. Their words run together for starters and it's hard to read back their own writing and for us to decipher their writing as well. This was my class in 2004. And I know that conventions of print are so difficult for students to learn as there are so many of them to remember. So I created this story "Spaceman to the Rescue". It's a story to share with your students to show them the single convention and importance of putting spaces between words in order to see where words start and end, thus making it more legible for all to read. Many of us use the Spacemen clothespins that are commercially prepared and many of us use Popsicle sticks to create our own or to mimic a finger for students to use to put a space in between words. This adorable rhyming story will introduce your students to Spaceman, who flies in to save the day and make writing legible. This has been used for close to 15 years by myself and my colleagues, who come to me each year requesting to borrow a copy of "Spaceman". I know your students will find this memorable and helpful when writing as well. Just print the colored pages and bind it together to create a classroom book.
