This product was developed after I noticed my Spanish 1 students struggling to recognize cognates within a text and use those cognates to determine correct multiple choice answers.
After completing this activity together and discussing how "cognates are our friends," my students did really well on the quiz.
Students are given a list of 20+ cognates
(e.g., la hamburguesa, activo, el oceano) and a grid with 10 common Spanish 1 infinitives
(e.g., comer, nadar, bailar). Students must write the cognate in the box(es) of the associate infinitive.
For example, "la musica = cantar and bailar" or "el oceano = nadar." The 10 infinitives align with those in En Espanol 1 Unidad 1 Etapa 1, but are relevant in any Spanish 1 classroom.
This product is a quick exercise to improve reading comprehension
with Spanish 1 students and develop various skills like making connections between English and Spanish words.
An answer key is included.
