Updated 11 activities
Whether you are looking for an activity for Black History month, or want your students to know about the lives of Afro-Hispanic people, start with Vanessa Mendoza! She was Colombia's first Afro-Colombian Beauty Queen, and it's perfect for Spanish 1!
Vocabulary highlighted in the Lectura/Text: Ser, Physical and Personality Descriptions, Family vocabulary
Activities:
1. Identity Activity: Before learning about Vanessa and her identity, students identify aspects of their own identity. This activity is perfect for working on physical and personality traits (Quizlet set included).
2. Text 1: Biographical information about Vanessa Mendoza
3. True/False Questions based on the biographical text.Â
4. Comprehension questions to extend understanding of the article and language usage
5. Extension activity: Students using their imagination to respond to a prompt related to the article.Â
6. Writing activity: students re-write the biography in the third person (10 point rubric included)
Second suite of activities
This newly added resource expansion allows students to view an authentic video about Vanessa’s life. Students are not required to understand this high-level of Spanish but are rather guided by the activity to pay attention to clues and text in the video and make inferences. The video is then followed up by a short comprehensible text, explaining some of the struggles Vanessa had as a congresswoman.
6. Listening activity: students listen to the first minute of the video and tick off the words they hear
7. Making connections; students generate predictions and inferences based on the vocabulary they’ve encountered.  Â
8. True/false activity based on the images they encountered in the video (this activity is in Spanish).
9. Short text contextualizing the video and adding more details about her life.Â
10. Post-comprehension questions: students respond in English and cite the text reference. Â
11. Writing activity 2: students expand their writing. They write a total of 10 sentences about Vanessa using the correct form of tener, ser, and gustar.Â
