Students work on improving their understanding of clothing (ropa) and shopping (compras) vocabulary by using Spanish definitions to identify the correct word. The students thus become the experts as they possess all the knowledge required to answer the question for their partner. It also allows them to feel empowered as they in a sense are the “teacher’ to their partner. Finally, it causes the students to remain in the target language, always a primary goal for language teachers.
The beauty of this activity is that the students think of it as a game because of the point system, thus engaging them. They don’t realize at the start that they are practicing the crucial skill of circumlocution. It also reinforces prior vocabulary and occasionally introduces new vocabulary that will further stretch their knowledge.
I use this activity in conjunction with the Realidades / Auténtico 1 series chapters 7A and 7B.
