I use this reader to introduce school and classes vocabulary to students.
1. Each pair of students were given a copy of the story to read in Spanish. They could translate the story into English as they read or they could read in Spanish and then go back and translate.
2. After reading, they had to define the vocabulary words which were bolded in the passage. They were reminded that they had to use context clues or what we call cognates to help decipher the meaning of any word that was not a cognate.
3. After getting the vocabulary word, students then had to say what classes they had using the model provided for them. I reviewed the crucial vocabulary words ( tengo, en la __ hora, se llama) to make sure that they were all starting at the same point.
* This actually took 2 days to do. The students read on the first day and had an opportunity to study their vocabulary that night. The next day, they were ready to give their schedules to their partner in Spanish.
