This product was designed for Georgia 5th grade social studies standards. However, it could be used with any grade level studying the basics of these topics. (This is NOT an in-depth study of these topics. It's just a basic introduction.)
This product consists of two pages of fill-in-the-blank cloze-style paragraphs, one page about the Spanish American War and another page about the Panama Canal. The third page of this product has 3 higher-order thinking questions about both events. The last two pages of the product are answer keys for the fill-in-the-blank pages.
Students should conduct some quick research on student-safe websites. They may work individually, but I would recommend doing with a partner or in small groups. Another option would be for students to use context clues with partners to fill in the blanks. Either way, I prefer having students work with at least one other partner for this activity. I have done it successfully both ways in my 5th grade classroom.
The following topics included in this product:
*Spain's treatment of Cuba
*USS Battleship Maine
*US possession of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines
*Great White Fleet
*Trade routes from Atlantic to Pacific
*Colombia's control of Panama
