This is a bundle of two HIGHLY ENGAGING activities based on HISTORICAL THINKING SKILLS. The first assignment is a STUDENT-LED DBQ which has a rubric that assesses historical thinking skills. This assignment could be used as an assessment which looks at two historical thinking skills as defined by the American Historical Association: Historical Comprehension and Historical Issues: Analysis & Decision Making.

Rather than the old method of hearing history, these assignments are focused on students DOING history. This is STUDENT-LED LEARNING. The DBQ allows students to look at four newspaper covers and investigate how yellow journalism helped cause the Spanish-American War. Also, students investigate assessment AS learning when they self-assess themselves based on the project. Students take ownership when they realize how they are being graded.

The second assignment is another STUDENT-LED activity based on historical thinking skills. This activity/assessment looks at two historical thinking skills as defined by the American Historical Association: Historical Research Skills and Historical Issues: Analysis & Decision Making. The project allows students to investigate how yellow journalism is used today. Students compare fake news that they see today to yellow journalism from the Spanish American War. Students see this project as a great way to make the Spanish American War RELEVANT to today's world. They can see how fake news can impact their life today.

In the first activity/assessment:
Students evaluate four primary sources.
Students organize their thoughts in a graphic organizer and answer questions.
Students write an article as if they were a reporter in 1899 exposing yellow journalism.
Students self-assess with descriptions on the rubric included. The students then grade for quality of work.

In the second activity/assessment:
Students research current examples of yellow journalism.
Students organize their thoughts in a graphic organizer.
Students choose a HIGHLY ENGAGING option from a choice board to show examples of yellow journalism.
Students self-assess with descriptions on the rubric included. The students then grade for quality of work.

I hope that you enjoy this product. I know that my students really appreciate relevant historical learning. In this assessment students are able to learn about yellow journalism, and see how headlines in the news may not be accurate. When it comes to learning history, there is no better way than to DO history!

This assessment goes with the Spanish American War Simulation! This lesson is one of the best lessons that I teach all year, and is extremely ENGAGING as students learn about the war from the perspective of a reporter in Cuba for William Randolph Hearst, and then from the perspective of a Rough Rider!
