In the last few years, the World Language teacher is finding that ALL teachers are expected to be teachers of reading and writing – in ENGLISH, as they explore their specific field of study. Just how is one to tackle this seemingly “double duty” responsibility when teaching a World Language?
With an increasing emphasis on reading more non-fiction media and writing in a more critical way, the World Language instructor can take advantage of easy access to different multilingual media formats on innumerable topics that can be of interest to our students.
This (5) page .pdf activity packet includes a “Think Question” related to a Spanish article that can be discussed before conducting a close reading. Students are guided through a mark-up and summation of the article in English. Follow up activities include: finding Key Words, finding meaning from context clues, supporting statements from the text, a short follow up writing in English.
The close reading activities are designed to guide the student reader through a more complex reading than is generally found in student texts. Students’ prior knowledge of both English and Spanish is utilized to successfully generate meaning and understanding and build confidence in our students as they are expected to build and expand their repertoire of critical reading skills.
