English Learners (ELs) get accommodations depending on the results of their W-APT (WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test), WIDA Screener, or yearly ACCESS test. One of the accommodations is the use of a word to word dictionary or electronic translator. These accommodations need to be practiced all year long. The problem is that many ELs are unfamiliar with a dictionary. Therefore, it is very important that we teach our students how to use a dictionary and give them time to practice using it. These "Using a Dictionary" packets will help them practice that skill. Another skill they practice is arranging words in alphabetical order because this will help them be more efficient while using the dictionary. Be aware, they should not use their dictionary during the Assessments of these packets!
Using a Dictionary 1 ~ School
This is the first packet in the Using a Dictionary series and teaches School related words. First, read the How To page together with the student(s). Then, give the student(s) only the first page: ABC Order. Make sure you read all the instructions together. After they are finished with page 1, let them take the Pre-Assessment without the use of a dictionary. After the Pre-Assessment, only give them page 3: Using a Dictionary. By giving them one page at the time, they need to know the words rather than search for the answers on a different page.
Note that page 4: The Waves is a very effective tool to learn another language. The vocabulary should be briefly studied first and then each column has to be covered when writing the translation in the next column. The student needs to check and correct mistakes before moving to the next column. Be aware that the last page is the key. Have fun!
