The Spanish explorers were influential in the exploration of Utah, but how do you start the unit. Here is a fun activity that will get your students out of their seats and experiencing what it was like to be on those early expeditions.
Students will be put into groups and sent on an exploratory mission of the school. They will need to create a map and a travel journal of what they see.
The basic areas of the school are where they will be traveling (Cafeteria, tennis courts, flag pole, main office, and library) if you don't have a certain area feel free to exclude it or change it to something else.
On the day of I come early and place a "mark" on the correct location, usually a print off of a large exclamation point. I enlist the help of the janitor to place it up high so students can't rip it off the wall. By telling them the right spots will have a mark, you can ensure your students go to the right place.
