I use this extra credit alternative frequently in my Spanish classes. Instead of creating extra worksheets for extra credit, I hand out the Spanish Super Star at the beginning of each semester. I explain to the students that they always have an opportunity to improve their grade, but it will require them to go 'above and beyond' their daily classwork or homework assignments. Every time that a student show exemplary work or goes that extra distance with their work, I stamp or add a sticker to their Spanish Super Star. For every 10 stamps or stickers, they may earn and additional 1% onto their semester grade, not going above 4%. At the end of the semester, students turn in their Super Star s. My students love that their work can earn them extra points at any given moment, not just at the end of the semester. This is also a great way for students to utilize old vocabulary in with what they are currently learning. I'm always giving them ideas on how they can improve the quality of their work.
