Here at the Mayes Homeschool we love visually appealing, engaging and easy to follow curriculum. The objective for this Spanish course is to introduce and familiarize the student with Spanish vocabulary and common greetings prior to learning grammar.
This conversational Spanish packet was created by me, a native-speaker and it is aligned to Spanish AP style and to the Real Academia de la Lengua Española's grammar rules.
The packet contains the following:
- Unit 1, Lesson 1: ¡Hola! Buenos Días
- Cut-and-paste vocabulary sheet for interactive notebook keeping
- Reading comprehension exercise (min. reading level 1)
- Advanced reading (min. reading level 2 required; to use should your student need an extra challenge)
- Lesson objectives and answer key.

This lesson introduces the student to four greetings: hello, goodbye, good morning and good evening/night. The first lesson heavily includes English subtitles but as we go further in the unit, the student will rely less and less on them.
This packet is perfect to do a quick basic conversational Spanish refresh lesson or if you'd like to build vocabulary and reading comprehension skills before you teach grammar. It is intended to facilitate the transition and engage the student in conversations and reading comprehension fully in Spanish.
Notes and suggestions:
Total lesson time: 45 min - 1 hr (you can divide the lesson in two parts if it's easier or are time-constricted. I suggest doing pages 1 and 2 the first part of the lesson, then doing page 3 and/or 4 during the second part, plus a group activity with the flashcards (or they can take them home to study, it's up to you).
- Print flashcards on card stock (80-100 lb weight paper) and laminate them. Use them over and over! Have the students trade them and practice the conversations learned during the lesson.
- On the upper right corner of pg. 2 there is a suggested method of pasting the vocabulary in the interactive notebook but you can use it as you wish. The suggested number of times for the student to practice writing the words is three but you can have the him/her do as many as you'd like. Repetition does help! The materials you need are simple: notebook, pencil, scissors and glue.
- On pg. 3 & 4 some English subtitles are "missing" but it was done so that the student relies less and less on them. They can go back within the lesson to look for the word definition or can be used along an English-Spanish dictionary. If you feel like using one, I recommend Larousse - the best I've found in Mexico so far. The student does not need to know Spanish phonics to try reading out loud. The narratives are short and repetitive, easy for the kids to follow, even in a foreign language. Easy phonics to figure out, even if the student hasn't been exposed to Spanish prior to this lesson. To make it easier or if you just want to check if you said it right, enter the word (for example, sol/sun) at www.spanishdict.com and the definitions come with an audio file you can play to check against your pronunciation. If you have any trouble with this, please contact me and I'll help.
- For the advanced reading exercise on pg. 4, the suggestion is for the student to read the narrative out loud, but you can either have students work in pairs, taking turns to read to each other or read along with you leading. If you think it will be too noisy, then you can have them read it to themselves or in a quiet voice.
