In lieu of compositional writing I provide my students with "puzzle pieces" with illustrations that can be used to tell a sequential story. There are no words on these pieces so they work for all languages (available online and in many book stores). To help my students, I give them this chart with common "fairy tale" expressions in the target language. We also review words like prince charming, castle, witch, king, magic broom, quest, etc so they can tell a story. Students have literary license to tell a story of their liking- that is appropriate for school of course- and I find they enjoy the assessment more than a restricted compositional writing.
