This is a series of worksheets (I use k-3, but could be applied any grade level up to 6th), about a classroom pet. In my room each grade has a different pet that reinforces culture that they take home (K is a bull, first is a llama, etc.). They care for the pet for a week, fill out a sheet about him, and share it with their classmates. The questions focus on high frequency, and high interest topics. They build on each other from year to year. We hang these in the hall, and students love to look at them all year long. When students bring the animals out into the community they often generate opportunities to speak with heritage speakers. This activity is a hit with parents and students. Although I use stuffed animals, laminated print outs of each animal could be used in place of the stuffed animals. There is a copy of each animal to laminate with the activity if you choose to go this route.
Included in each Level of the Activity (Levels 1-4) is a slideshow to introduce the 'pet' to the students. A parent letter to explain the activity to parents (all you have to do is sign, and the student worksheet. The animal for level 1 is a bull.
