Background information: A formative assessment is one that informs you about how the students are doing with learning the material and achieving objectives. With that information, you formulate plans and strategies for re-teaching or proceeding. This type of assessment can be anything from a thumbs-up/ thumbs-down gesture from students in response to a question from you to a traditional quiz. They can be graded or not. The purpose is for you, the instructor, use the feedback to adjust your teaching to meet more specific needs.
For the students, formative assessments help them think about how they are engaging with the material, hold them accountable for learning the material , and show them the progress they are (or are not) making towards the objectives. The feedback should cause them to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses with the material and to adjust their learning habits and skills in order to meet the objectives.
