Product Description
In this editable lesson (Google Docs link provided), which is simple enough for Spanish 1 to follow but could also be used for upper level classes reviewing Martí and Cuba, students answer a series of questions about Cuba while watching several short videos on YouTube (links provided) about-
1) Cuban children talking about what they want to be when they grow up
2) Cuban exiles in Miami celebrating Fidel Castro's death
3) Cubans in Cuba mourning Fidel Castro's death
4) Cuban exiles in Miami gathering for a celebration of José Martí (a national holiday in Cuba - as seen in the movie ¡Viva Cuba!)
After reflecting on how Martí is a hero to ALL Cubans (while Castro clearly is not), students will read and answer questions about Versos Sencillos (fragments) and then write their own version of the poem. This is a two day lesson (worksheet 1 on Cuba, one page back and front, on Day 1, and worksheet 2 on Versos Sencillos, one page back and front) on Day 2. You can have students simply work on their own version of Versos Sencillos in class or extend it into a small project with a due date several weeks out. I love using this lesson with the movie ¡Viva Cuba! or on José Martí's birthday, January 28th (also works well with AP, Los héroes)
