PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Recognizing Geometrical Flat, Solid Shapes and Lines is actually a pre-reading skill as letters are just more complicated Shapes. Children will apply the same skills that they used in recognizing squares, circles, cubes, vertical or horizontal lines, and many other shapes to recognize and name all of the letters as well as many of their words. When they are first learning to read most kids will learn sight words based on their “shape”. Also, when children practice drawing each of the Geometrical Flat, Solid Shapes, and Lines they are learning the components they will need to print letters. The ability to draw circles, half circles, vertical lines, prepares kids for writing b,c, d and p and triangles help with w,v and z among many other letters.
A majority of children love to express themselves through various forms of art. Whether it is through coloring, painting or making creatures out of play-dough the knowledge of shape and color will help them to create what they imagine in their minds and give them a sense of self-confidence. Also the use of color can be used to express feelings and emotions that young children may not have the words to describe. The most common example of this is using the color red to express anger. By showing kids that Geometrical Flat, Solid Shapes and lines not only exist in “cartoon” form on paper but as objects in everyday life they often gain a new perspective of their surroundings. They no longer see the tiles on the bathroom floor as “the floor” but as fitting into another category as well: “squares”. On the other hand, Tessellations can be very useful in education and in teaching mathematics. They can be used from kindergarten to high school. Creating tessellations does not depend largely on numerical skills; therefore students with many different levels of mathematical abilities can create them. All students have an equal chance to make wonderful artwork and patterns with tessellations. The older the students, the more complicated the artwork and patterns can be. Just the problem solving, that is part of creating the tessellation patterns, makes it worth the time spent on teaching about them. Since tessellations have patterns made from small sets of tiles they could be used for different counting activities. Students could count how many tiles are in a certain row (or square, or group, or triangle), they could count how many of the tiles are colored a certain color, or they could find a group of eight diamonds (or any other specified shape). Two or more tiles usually make some other shape. So students could find some tiles that make a square, a large triangle, a hexagon, etc. Students could possibly find how many different shapes they could make with six (or any number) tiles. If the shape s are not the usual geometric shapes the students could sketch a picture of the design or shape that they found. . This new perspective on the world can be very exciting and rejuvenating for kids just as it is for adults when we discover a new outlook on life building a base of knowledge that they will use for the rest of their life! These are also necessary for mathematical skills. On the other hand, students can learn new vocabulary words in Spanish Solid Shapes with this activity. Great for math and Spanish stations, intervention groups or individual work.
