"Cartas de Marta" (y David) are a series of "penpal letters" that include one letter each from (fictitious Spanish-speakers) Marta and David. Each letter is a reading comprehension exercise as well as an opportunity for your student to practice communicating in writing.
Each "Cartas" includes:
2 versions of a letter on the topic, each with:
reading comprehension questions,
a space for new vocabulary,
a "notes" section with grammar and culture points,
a page for students' written response,
a self-assessment checklist
a full teacher guide with instructions, suggestions for pacing and differentiation,
a feedback rubric to encourage better writing, and suggested scoring guide.
These "Cartas" are a perfect addition to any curriculum because they reinforce and review common topics by immersion, tapping into students' natural desire to communicate with peers and talk about themselves.
More personal and relational than a "journal entry," the "cartas" activities embed common idiomatic expressions, cultural considerations, and common vocabulary not necessarily taught in the textbook.
