INSTRUCTIONS:
Included in this document are 30 Café Charla cards for the designated unit. You can use them however you’d like, however I prefer to do the following:
- Cut out 10 sets of cards
- Use a single hole punch to puncture the top left corner of each card (I use a durable hole punch that can punch 20 cards at once)
- Store each set of cards on a small 1” metal flash card ring
- Have students work in pairs or small groups to pass the Café Charla ring around in a clockwise motion, asking a question to the person on their left when it is their turn.
I find that 10 sets is plenty for my classes of 25-30 students. My students work in groups of 2-4 for this activity, and we usually play for 15 minutes.
For a deeper discussion activity, you may direct students to speak about each card at length, requiring each student in the group to provide an answer. You can also be mindful of your pairings, matching the less confident students with those who will bring them into the conversation.
For a larger group activity, you could split your class into two teams and require two people from each side to answer each question aloud, while requiring each student in the class to speak at least three times.
I like to pull these out whenever we have a few spare minutes in class. They are a perfect and productive filler! I hope this activity helps your students to feel supported in using the target language :)
