Are you teaching or reviewing the preterit and the imperfect? This story is a great way to show students how both tenses are used together. The students love reading about "El secreto de Emilia". The story is three paragraphs long and is easily read by my Spanish 2 students. Feel free to translate any words in the story into English that you think may help your students. All preterit and imperfect verbs are in italics to help students identify them. Included after the story are:
-Instructions for students to read the story aloud with a partner to practice pronunciation
-5 questions about the story in Spanish. Students could answer in either English or Spanish
-Instructions for students to circle the imperfect and underline the preterit verbs which are all in italics for easy identification
-A chart in which students write 5 preterit and 5 imperfect verbs from the story and a brief reason why that tense is used
-A section in which students can illustrate the story.
There are so many possibilities for this story! My high school students particularly love to act out the story as I narrate it. Wait to give students the story handout until after the acting is done, then they won't work ahead to the questions. You could also hand out just the story paper, then the questions and activities so that students don't work ahead when they are supposed to be reading aloud.
