Your students know the preterite. They just learned about the imperfect. Now you just need to introduce writing both tenses side by side and help them to understand where it all fits together! This expanding story helps to do just that! The basic story is written entirely in the imperfect. The students then watch as the story literally expands making room for the preterite completed actions to bring it all together. (*Please see the preview in presentation mode to see how the story expands) Students have a worksheet with the story and blanks. Each time you advance the powerpoint, and it expands, you have your students create their own completed actions on their worksheets. The powerpoint story then will show an appropriate response before moving on to the next part of the story. At the end of the story, each student will have something a little different based upon the answers they gave. Have them work in groups to discuss how the preterite helped to pull the story together and how it has improved the story. Add a bit of competition and let them vote for the best story of the class! Also included is a worksheet for them to write their own, original story after they have worked through the model.
