Your students know the preterite. They feel pretty confident writing in the preterite. Now you just need to introduce writing with the imperfect and help them to understand where it all fits together! This expanding story helps to do just that! The basic story is written entirely in the preterite. The students then watch as the story literally expands making room for the imperfect descriptions to bring it all together. (*Please see the preview in presentation mode to see how the story expands) Students have a worksheet with the story and blanks. Each time you advance the powerpoint, and it expands, you have your students create their own descriptions on their worksheets. The powerpoint story then will show an appropriate description before moving on to the next part of the story. At the end of the story, each student will have something a little different based upon the answers they gave. Have them work in groups to discuss how the imperfect has improved the story and WHY these verbs are even in the imperfect. Add a bit of competition and let them vote for the best story of the class! Also included is a worksheet for them to write their own, original story after they have worked through the model.
