Provide your students with Spanish Reading Comprehension practice and cover important Current Events at the same time.
I originally created this reading activity for my Spanish II class after reading about the recent earthquake in Ecuador. Not only does this bundle of materials support reading in the target language, it provides a great opportunity to discuss current events in the Spanish-speaking world, challenge students to think globally and environmentally, as well as making authentic connections between the natural sciences and the Spanish curriculum.
I have added a second reading activity describing the earthquake in Mexico on September 19, 2017. Together, the materials can be thoroughly covered over a two-class period.
The materials in this bundle include:
1. paragraph-length news articles that:combine both present and past tense verb forms,
2. a brief word search of key terms from the reading, and
3. cognates that can be used to teach / reteach reading strategies,
A second version of the Ecuador handout is offered in a "fill-in-the-blank" format with a word bank.
All of the reading handouts are accompanied by answer keys.
For added value, I am also including a map of the affected region in Mexico and a flag of Ecuador that can be printed and displayed in the classroom.
I think that these materials be very helpful whether you need a reading activity, handouts for your substitute teacher packet, homework, end-of-year review, or even for use in bilingual or immersion Science classes.
