Provide your students with Reading Comprehension Practice and take advantage of Mardis Gras at the same time.
In this bundle you get:
1 A two-paragraph description of the Origin of Mardis Gras written in Spanish. I was careful to include only material that is age and content appropriate for middle and high school students.
There are discussion / assessment questions at the end of the selection. In one version, the questions are written in Spanish and in a second version, I wrote the questions in English for differentiation. The answer key serves both versions.
There is also a small box in the upper right corner with, "Sugerencias" that provides students with useful Reading Comprehension strategies. (Skimming, cognates, predicting, etc.)
2 This bundle also includes a word search with key words found in the reading. This will be a great warm-up or brain break for students.
3 Lastly, there is a second, Spanish-language, guided reading selection that provides and overview of the city of New Orleans. The overview describes the location and typical weather of the famous city.
There is a key word guide at the bottom of the handout where students can research or review the words that will make the reading more accessible. The guide can be assigned for homework or used as a warm-up / bell ringer. The sentences of the selection are also double-spaced so that students can mark the text as a reading strategy or write their own translation.
I designed these materials for my Spanish 1 and 2 classes but I think that it will work well for all levels as a formative assessment or cultural activity.
I also think that readings like this are great ways to tap into the enthusiasm and cheer that comes with holiday seasons. This activity is sure to become a valuable resource for you and can also be included in your substitute teacher plans.
