This PowerPoint contains 21 pictures that I took in Costa Rica of different road/traffic signs. The first slide contains the title of the activity called “Manejando en Costa Rica” and three pictures that show streets in Costa Rica. The second slide is an activity sheet that can be printed for students (or students can use their own piece of paper), and it explains what students are to do. Basically, I ask students to interpret the meaning of each road sign in English. How do they do this? Well, I do this activity during a chapter on driving, so they are familiar with a lot of the vocabulary. However, they are also able to simply use context clues, like the color and shape of the signs, as well as other pieces of information in the picture. This is a great skill for language learners of all levels to master!
The pictures in this PowerPoint would be great to enhance a unit on driving or giving directions. They could even be printed and used for a bulletin board or another type of activity. But as I said, this would also be a great lesson for teaching students to use what they know! If they ever travel, they will definitely find themselves having to do this.
For vocabulary that might be difficult, I have given clues on some slides. I have also incorporated Math into this lesson by giving students the conversion formulas for kilometers vs. miles per hour as well as the Costa Rican colón vs. the US dollar.
Slide #’s 24-43 contain the answers as well as an explanation of kph/mph and colones/dollar conversions. I have also added several cultural tidbits in English about things students may see in the pictures and find interesting, such as the fact that taxis in Costa Rica are red! Feel free to message me with any other questions about pictures. Enjoy!
