The following collection of spelling sorts is aligned to the ENIL 1 Blue (1Azul) level. The 11 spelling sorts help students practice reading and spelling words with inflections, suffixes, and dipthongs. Each week also includes 5 “palabras de poder” from the 1 blue level. These are commonly used words in Spanish.
Day 1: Teacher introduces words to the class or small group. Students make a sketch next to each word to trigger their understanding of the word’s meaning. Students put the words in alphabetical order. Students take page one home to work on throughout the week.
Day 2: Students cut out words and sort. They sort and resort while reading the words aloud. Students write categories on the top half of the page.
Day 3: Students do the sort again for practice, reading words aloud.
Then students complete cloze sentences.
Day 4: Students sort again, reading words aloud. Students draw the meaning of words.
Day 5: Students search for words that follow the same pattern in books in classroom print. Teacher gives spelling test of 10 words.
