Worksheets and Pronunciation Practice Charts about the syllables GE, GI, GUE, GUI, GÜE, GÜI
NOTE: This topic is usually taught in 3rd grade in Spanish-speaking countries.
We teach this in Chile at that age as it is a common problem when students are spelling words with these syllables. If your students are not in a Spanish-speaking environment or classroom, then I recommend using these worksheets at a much higher grade as the vocabulary will most likely be difficult for them. The pronunciation charts can still be used at a lower level.
For speaking practice we have included two charts.
1. With the syllables GE - GI - GUE - GUI
2: With the syllables GE - GI - GUE - GUI - GÜE - GÜI
The syllables are in random order to practice the difference between the hard G and the soft G sound. The instructions say "Lee la sílaba" (Read the syllable)
Contains two activities. The first activity has 6 words in Spanish that have the GE or GI part removed it. For example: Cole__o. Students need to draw a line to the correct syllable that is missing (in this case the GE) and also write that same syllable in the space that appears in that word.
The second activity at the bottom is where there are 16 words in boxes. Students need to color the word green if that word has a strong G sound or color it red if it has a soft G sound.
There are 12 words at the bottom of the page below a chart with two columns. One column is headed with GÜE-GÜI and the other column with GUE-GUI. Students need to cut out each word and put them in the corresponding column. They can then read out loud each column to get accustomed to the difference in pronunciation of the two types of syllables.
There are three activities.
1. There are four sentences. One of the words in the sentence is missing either GÜE or GÜI and students need to write the correct one.
2. There are six words with a syllable missing. Students need to use one of the syllables in the list (ge, gi, gue, gui, güe, güi) to fill the blank.
3. There are six words with their syllables mixed up. Students need to put the syllables in order to make a word.
IMPORTANT: All of the worksheets, including instructions, are 100% in Spanish
